Lines Form Days before Opening of Studio Ghibli Store "Donguri Republic" - First Overseas Branch

Donguri Republic, the store selling merchandise based on the works of the Studio Ghibli anime production company, opened a branch at LCX on June 21 (Shop 19, LCX, Ocean Terminal, Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui). It is such a hit that lines still form in the morning and remain all day.

The new Donguri Republic is so popular that people took off from work just to line up on opening day. In fact, a line had already formed days beforehand. Customers now wait three hours on weekends.

As in Japan, Studio Ghibli's home, the films it has produced over the past 20 years are immensely popular in Hong Kong. Those works include famous hits like "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind," "Castle in the Sky" and "My Neighbor Totoro," along with more recent titles such as "Howl's Moving Castle" and "Ponyo." A life-size Totoro and a Catbus model only found here in Hong Kong greet visitors to the 1,400-square-foot store and guide them into the world of Ghibli.

The shop's merchandise lineup of over 700 Ghibli-themed items mainly consists of various household goods, stuffed animals and picture books. Some products only available in Hong Kong are being sold periodically for limited times only.

Business hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
